STORYWEAVERS

Your role at the Table

In the Tapestry TTRPG, Storyweavers are the narrative guides who bring the world to life. They describe scenes, portray characters, shape challenges, and help players explore the Loom through collaborative storytelling. While players focus on their individual heroes, Storyweavers weave the threads that connect every moment into a shared tale.

What Storyweavers Do

A Storyweaver’s role is flexible and creative. They:

  • Present the world and its mysteries
  • Play the roles of allies, rivals, and adversaries
  • Set up challenges and dramatic moments
  • Respond to player choices and guide the flow of the story
  • Keep the tone, pacing, and themes consistent

The goal isn’t control — it’s collaboration.

1) Frame the moment

Start with what’s happening right now and why it matters. Put a clear tension in the air—time, danger, attention, scarcity, suspicion—then ask what the characters do about it. Your best friend is clarity: what’s true, what’s uncertain, and what could change.

2) Adjudicate with momentum

Roll when the outcome is uncertain and the moment has stakes. Strong results push forward cleanly. Mixed results succeed with a cost, complication, or hard choice. Bad results don’t stall the story—they add pressure, reveal a worse truth, or force a trade. Keep the camera moving.

3) Weave consequences

Every outcome leaves a mark. Success creates openings. Failure creates complications. Either way, the world should feel different after the roll—new positions, new threats, new leverage, new obligations. That’s how Tapestry earns story: the characters change the situation, and the situation changes them.

Make Consequences That Matter

  • Worsen position (you’re exposed, separated, cornered)
  • Cost a resource (time, gear, favor, safety)
  • Add a condition (shaken, wounded, marked, watched)
  • Escalate the threat (reinforcements, alarms, pursuit)
  • Create a choice (save the plan or save the person)
  • Reveal truth (the world shows its teeth)

Players earn Threads when things go wrong and spend them to bend fate when it counts. Your job is to give them moments worth spending on—tight situations, meaningful costs, and consequences that feel real. Don’t nickel-and-dime. Let the tension build so their ‘miracle’ moments feel earned.

Denizens / Adversaries

Denizens are built to be modular: you can grab a threat, tag its role and vibe, and run it without flipping pages for an hour. Enemies should pressure decisions, not extend combat length.

  • Pick a role (brute, skirmisher, controller, etc.)
  • Give it a signature move
  • Tie it to the scene’s pressure

Prep situations, not plots. Decide who wants what, what happens if nobody interferes, and what pressure is already ticking. Bring a few names, a few locations, and one problem that won’t politely wait.

  • 3 NPCs with desires
  • 3 locations with problems
  • 1 clock/timer pushing events forward

Tools for Storyweavers

The Rules & Rulings Guide provides Storyweavers with clear tools for running sessions smoothly, resolving actions, and adapting the story as it unfolds. For deeper worldbuilding and encounter design, the Adversary Compendium and Players Guide offer additional support.
